My name is Sophie Freestone and I want to be the next Oak Grove School District Board Trustee for Area 3.

My Story

I was asked. Really. Teachers and parents at my neighborhood school asked me to run for School Board Trustee.

I have been a parent at Parkview Elementary since August 2021 when my oldest son entered Kindergarten. After navigating life as a elementary school mom, I decided I wanted to be more involved. Volunteering for the occasional event or chaperoning field trips wasn’t enough for me.

I wanted to be where the decisions were being made. I had opinions and I wanted to understand how to make change. I joined the Parkview School Community Association (PSCA) as Secretary and learned how much work there was to do and how little help we had to achieve any lasting change or improvements.

During the 2025-2026 school year, I stood up at Board and District meetings to share my belief that teachers and staff deserve more pay and more security in their jobs. Teachers are the power house of the school. We need teachers to educate, nurture, and guide our students. Just as students need to have a safe home, guaranteed food, and a good night’s rest to do their best learning, teachers’ need to be able to afford rent, pay their bills, and not work multiple jobs to be able to educate our students.

I have and will continue to dedicate my time, my money, and my resources to helping improve Oak Grove for all students.

Why I’m Running

I knew I had to run for School Board because of a board meeting that made everything clear. I attended a parent association meeting where the Superintendent dismissed the teachers' request for increased salary as unreasonable and claimed the Union wouldn't negotiate. I was appalled. I went to the following board meeting with my kids and had to wait until 9pm for our turn to speak up for our teachers and the salary increase they deserve. Our teachers deserve to be heard, not shut down. After that meeting, I was asked to step up and run. I'm running because our educators deserve to be heard, valued, and supported. I'm running because we need someone at the table who actually listens and understands what our families and educators are living through.
